Customer Reviews: One of my favourite records January 20, 2007 Jari Ahvalo (Finland) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I feel quite stupid trying to write a review for this album. What can I say? This one is one of my favourite albums of alltime, this is magic. And this is one is not just music for me, it's live in it's most simpliest and loveliest form, like bread and butter. If any music should have a stamp of "home-made", this one should have it. (Though this one is recorded in a studio )
Great bluesy country recordings played with great skill of finger-picking and a soft gentle voice. This one is like visiting your late grandfather for a milk and cookies or something. Though John Hurt was in his 30's while recording these tracks, there's some sort of aura of agelessness and wisdom beyond years.
Pure Piedmontese picking April 30, 2008 J. Duffell (Norfolk, England) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
John Hurt was a master of his art. Unlike some of his contemporaries, this isn't rough and raw. His playing is tender, gentle and mature. Hurt's fingerpicking style and the quality of the recording process make this a lot easier on the ear than many of the more basic recordings of many, but it's still pure, unadultared blues.
Delta blues that break the stereotype August 2, 2009 Papa Bell (Salop) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
These are beautiful recordings - in sound quality and content - from the 1920s of a truly great musician. The gentle guitar picking and vocal style (I always think of Bert Jansch) are proof that the Mississippi Delta was fertile in styles of music, not just quantity. Son House this is not. But the appreciation of both is essential to understanding the Delta blues. Why this should confuse some is odd.
So, this is a nice and inexpensive collection of a great Delta Bluesman's early 'Okeh' recordings that sound as alive as anything recorded today, and will probably make you want the late Mr Hurt as a grand-father, such is his good nature and relaxed manner.
stagole blues- u cant beat it June 30, 2005 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Its a very good album, if your into blues then i suggest you buy it, the fingerpicking style is very simple but very hard to play it how Hurts plays it. You cant go wrong with this album, have fun listening to it!
