| Customer Reviews: The other king of the delta blues November 15, 2008 A. Gordon (Aberdeen, Scotland) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The reputation of several of the great early blues artists rests on a handful of recordings made in the 30s. Those of Robert Johnson and Son House are rightly revered, but these dazzling recordings by Skip James deserve a place alongside them as amongst the greatest blues tracks ever laid down. James was a true original with a haunting, ghostlike voice, and a distinctive fast-picking guitar style. He was also one of the great blues songwriters, the author of a series of blues classics that are the equal of anything in Johnson's catalogue: 'Hardtime Killing Floor Blues', 'Cherry Ball', Cypress Grove' and 'Devil Got My Woman', are some of the most penetrating and evocative blues tracks ever recorded. 'I'm So glad', later covered by Cream, is an uptempo gem, one of the masterpieces of blues picking with James' beautiful falsetto to the fore. The album also includes a number of pieces where James, the son of a preacher, accompanies himself on piano showing his versatility as a musician, particularly in the lively, staccato rhythms of 'How Long'. This album brings together all the surviving recordings of James in his prime - it would be over 30 years until he was rediscovered and performed again, to great acclaim at the 1964 Newport Festival. This album is an absolute essential for any lover of the blues. The only sadness is that James was not as extensively recorded as Johnson, and that some of the recordings are not in a great condition. Nevertheless this is all we have of the great man, and I give thanks that we do.
