| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review This 1996 album picks up where Dancing the Blues left off three years earlier, with producer John Porter and most of the same studio cast. There is more of a New Orleans flavour this time, with barrelhouse pianist Jon Cleary contributing a couple of originals to go with such classics as Jesse Hill's "Ooh Poo Pah Doo" and Fats Domino's "Let the Four Winds Blow". Bonnie Raitt and a full vocal chorus help kick "I Need Your Loving" into overdrive. Mahal's one original is the tender, acoustic country-sounding "Lovin' in My Baby's Eyes". --Rick Mitchell

| Customer Reviews: It's no phantom... it's the Real Thing... June 21, 2008 G. E. Harrison (Cheltenham) This record is mainly Taj doing old R&B material like Doc Pomus's "Lonely Avenue" and Little Milton's "We're goin to make it" and doing it very well with a great band that includes contributions from both his British keyboard players/MDs - Jon Cleary and Mick Weaver. There are also some stellar guests - Eric Clapton plays some really nice blues guitar on "Here in the dark" and "Love her with a feeling" and Bonnie Raitt sings beautifully with Taj on "I need your loving". The record also ends with "The car of your dreams" Taj entering Little Axe-style modern blues territory that he was to revisit later with "Squat that rabbit.
Taj contributes one new song to the party and what a song, "Lovin' in my baby's eyes" is a fabulous song, worth the price of the CD on its own (and I really mean that.) With it's beautiful melody underpinned by plucked National guitar and Taj's harmonica, it's a song that really grows on you and must be one of the best songs Taj has ever written. "Phantom Blues" mainly carries on from Taj's previous album the Grammy winning "Dancin' the blues" but "Lovin' in my baby's eyes" is a wonderful bonus.
well worth a listen December 2, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
if you are not familiar with taj mahal then you would be better of starting with the "very best of" double collection - if you have that, or if you want to check out a studio lp that doesn't overlap (bar 1 track) - the fact that only 1 track from this lp made it onto the "best of" should in no way put you off - this is as good a starting point as any. well worth checking out. top draw light rock blues.
