5 out of 5 stars Be prepared to be impressed!   October 30, 2007

Ok so bought both the DVD and the CD yesterday on my lunch break. Got back to the office and gave the CD a spin and subsequently did a review for the CD yesterday. Got back home and then watched the DVD. Ok so the CD blew me away and the DVD just showed my why. What you hear is a band on top form playing brilliantly and really on a great vibe. What you see...well that's something else! Jimi Hendrix was a master showman who really wanted to impress and please the audience. I started my review of the CD saying that I never really got Hendrix until now. What the DVD showed me was what I have been missing all these years.

Technically the picture quality is extremely impressive given the age of the original 16mm print, coupled with a brilliant 5.1 re-master and re-mix by Eddie Kramer, who worked with the man back in the day really sucks you in to the whole performance.

The money shot as they say gives you probably one of the most iconic, history making moments of rock music in glories quality and is worth the purchase just for that moment when he sacrifices his guitar by setting fire to it. Wow!!! The look on the audiences faces in the cut away shots says it all. Can there ever be a greater moment in rock!

So if you have ever had any hint of an interest in Jimi Hendrix but never quite got it, and want to be wowed, buy this DVD and prepare to be very impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Hendrix: 40 years and he's still on fire   October 12, 2007

Back in 1967 Jimi Hendrix made his US live debut with The Experience at the Monterey Pop Festival. This year marks the 40th Anniversary of Jimi's legendary performance (including the historic 'guitar-on-fire' sequence).

The DVD has been digitally remastered and mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound by Jimi's original sound recording engineer, Eddie Kramer. The picture quality is sharp as a razor, almost impeccable. The original analogue recording mixed in 5.1 is raw, punchy, dangerous and exciting.

The film footage is crystal clear, almost three dimensional. There is no no sign of grain. It's like you are watching a rock'n'roll hologram.

A few years ago, Hendrix fans were blown away with the release of the longform DVD of Jimi Hendrix Live At Woodstock. That DVD was the number one best selling music DVD in the UK for six consecutive weeks. This time around, Live at Monterey, continues to celebrate the genius that is Jimi Hendrix.

It's Hendrix at his most exciting; a raw, untamed, sexually explicit and pulsating guitar performance from one of the greatest guitarists known to man.

What really gives this release the ultimate rush, are the extras. The DVD is steeped with several documentaries including the brand new film American Landing.

40 years of rock'n'roll. Live at Monterey is a masterpiece. The legacy continues. . .

For years we've been waiting for the Hendrix estate to re-release this piece of music history. In short, this is the Holy Grail of music DVDs... You cannot do without it.

5 out of 5 stars The man   February 1, 2008

First off as a DVD this is superb, the quality of picture and sound for something that was originally recorded in 1967 will blow you away, as will Jimi's unforgettable performance.
I've been a Hendrix music fan for a good while but I'd never actually seen him play a full set like you do on this DVD, I'd only ever seen brief clippings from documentaries etc before. Why?! Jimi at the Monterey is one of the best musical PERFORMANCES I've ever seen and anybody with even a passing interest in rock music (not just its history) should be forced to watch it, man if he played like that at every gig he played it's no wonder his rise to fame was so meteoric. Even now in 2008 I had to physically attach my lower jaw back to my face after watching the 'sacrifice', just think what it did to the people who watched it in the 60's! Before Hendrix Elvis shaking his hips was considered shocking - what happens when a man tries to make love to his guitar before setting it on fire! Additionally even though the fire is probably the most memorable part of the set I defy you to watch the build-up and first few chords of 'Wild Thing' and not consider it to be one of the coolest things you've ever seen. Some may not think he's the best to ever play the guitar (there have been some awesome guitarists since Hendrix died) but there is no doubt he was the greatest, he virtually invented the guitar cliche to be attempted and used in so many different ways since (playing behind his head, behind his back, through his legs and with his teeth) and all from this one 40 minute set, its amazing. Yes he was a showman but as he said himself all he plays is truth and emotion and that my friends can't be taught or imitated, Hendrix is the man, watch this and you'll see what I mean.

for those of us too young to have seen jimi , let alone remember him , the hype and god like status that has been given to him since his death can seem a little puzzling. after all, these days almost every teenage wannabe guitar hero can play with his teeth , or above his head and my gran can set fire to almost anything , let alone a musical instrument.
well puzzle no more!!!!!!! even 40 years on nobody , and i mean nobody , has come close to the ferocity and intensity that he played with. he couldn't just make his guitar sing , it screamed for its very existence.
for the short 40 mins or so he was on stage , his presence loomed large over not just monterey but over rock music for years to come. he had set the bench mark for which all other rock guitarists would either be judged or aspire to. yeah!! page , clapton , iommi , etc , etc ,etc, have all shaped the rock guitar in their own way but i bet deep down inside that they could play like jimi. noel redding and mitch mitchell were the perfect foil for him and deserve much more acclaim as musicians than they sometimes get. sadly jimi never made it past 1971 , but luckily we still have the archive performances to drool over
