| Customer Reviews: Continues his return to form July 6, 2010 Big Jim (London, UK) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
Walter Trout consolodates his poeition as one of the premier blues men around with this fine album. Ranging from slow blues to rockers, bayou boogie to country, there is a wide range of styles covered here and all done with considerable aplomb. My one complaint would be that the album as a whole doesn't push any boundaries as such, but that needn't be seen as too problematic as it is done so well.
Probably a 4 1/2 star album in truth, I'll give it 5 for helping keep the blues alive
...vibrant, passionate, blues-rock... July 16, 2010 Mr. H (Embra) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Hot on the heels of last years career roundup and rarities collection "Unspoiled By Progress", Walter Trout enters his seventh decade with a fantastic 12 track, all original, brand new album.
There's certainly no sign of a man resting on his laurels as he embarks on a record which sees him traversing the entire gamut of Blues, from the raging opening track 'May Be A Fool' on into the slow, acoustic tinged 'Open Book, the southern rock styled 'Her Other Man', and on into the Hendrix styled 'No Regrets'.
But no man can remain untouched by time, and there is a spiritual edge to some of the material, especially on the title track and on 'Eyes Of A Child'. Indeed, the title track may well be one of the best tracks Walter Trout has ever recorded, and considering this is his 20th album, that's some statement.
The legendary John Porter has come up with am amazing production, no doubt helped by the stellar band that Trout has surrounded himself with - drummer Kenny Aronoff, bassist James 'Hutch' Hutchinson and keyboards man Jon Cleary, who has added some amazing Hammond organ touches to the album. All the more remarkable considering the recording sessions lasted a mere 10 days, something that should be pointed out to a lot of the youngsters out there.
Don't be fooled though, Walter Trout still knows how to rock it up, and if that's your thing, then you'll want to check out 'Danger Zone' and 'Loaded Gun' for all your Blues-rocking requirements. Walter Trout is also in the finest voice of his career, and this is a record that can stand up against his best.
I'M ASHAMED I'VE NEVER HEARD OF WALTER August 8, 2010 FastHand (Harefield, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm ashamed that I've never heard of Walter Trout until I got Danny Bryant's RedEyeBand "Days like This" album and heard him play with Walter on the 8 minute track of the album name. Danny Bryant said Walter was one of his all time favorite guitarists and he was'nt wrong. When I was a kid I used to follow John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers because of the young talented guitarists Eric Clapton and Peter Green and when they left the band I stopped listening to John Mayall. If I had continued then I would have been introduced to Walter Trout. You've got to be good to play for Mayall. "Common Ground" album is excellent with rock, melodies and soul all revolving around the blues. Needless to say Walter's guitar playing is superb. There's only one track I don't like and that is "Hudson had Help" ( the only song on the album he did not write ) as it's a country/Hillybilly style number. However don't be put off the rest of the album is brilliant and the guitar playing at times spell binding. I don't like to pick out tracks as they are all good except track 6 which I mentioned. "Common Ground" builds up to a blistering finale, "Song For my Guitar" is a beautiful lovesong that any woman would be pleased to have it written for her and "No Regrets" is a barnstorming number reminiscent of Jimmy Hendrix. Although I did'nt like track 6 I still thought it still deserved 5 stars. Buy it and I don't think you will be disappointed. I'm off to see Walter live in October and I can't wait.
He's done it again August 14, 2010 Ole Ringsgaard Joergensen (Odense C, Denmark) Once again Walter Trout has made a great guitar blues CD! He can play the blues!
No sparkle August 10, 2010 music lover (rugby, warwickshire United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I like to think I have every official release done by Walter. Been following him since the early 90's. Sorry, I just cannot get into this release. May I suggest anyone new to Walter goes for any of his Live cd's as that is where he really shows his skills. I'm sure the tracks on this cd will be prevalent in his forthcoming tour where I have no doubt they will sound much better. Sorry, he has done much, much better.
