Amazon.co.uk Review Rodrigo and Gabriela are two fast-fingered, Dublin-based Mexicans with a unique sound created on acoustic guitars. Their music is difficult to define, straddling both world and rock, and often imbued with the timeless Hispano classical influences. The fire in it comes from their life-long passion for metal music. Rodrigo is a deft finger-picker who can move from raging speed to sensual soul in the space of a fret, while Gabriela employs fast, rhythmic techniques. Her percussionist's thrashing of strings and drumming of the instrument's body inevitably raises comparisons with flamenco which they acknowledge as an influence but swerve as a pigeonhole. The duo's repertoire flies beyond familiar Latin folk guitar styles because of the metal connection: their reworkings of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven and Metallica's Orion are musts, and the presence on "Ixtapa" of the fiery Hungarian gypsy violinist, Roby Lakatos, is inspirational.

Mind Blowing December 27, 2006 T. J. Alvarez (Surrey, UK) 24 out of 24 found this review helpful
What can i say. I found Rodrigo Y Gabreila's contribution to my record collection nothing less than stunning. Im a big fan of flamenco greats such as Paco De Lucia, Nino Josele and Oscar Herrero, and have grown up listening to a variety of genres including alternative, indie and samba.
You cannot 'genre' Rodrigo y Gabriela, as they are fusion musicians expressing thier backgrounds and tastes . The untrained ear could simply brand them as another flamenco act, but they are so much more. If thier work was played on an electric guitar rather than acoustic, if wouldnt sound out of place in a heavy metal concert.
Rodrigo Y Gabriela draw inspiration from the wildest of sources, given the type of music they play. They cite metal bands such as iron maiden as influences, and its not hard to see once you give this cd a few listens. Rodrigo's fretwork is blindingly quick and sharp and Gabriela 's guitar is the perfect complement to this. Tamacun is my personal favourite, but if you just sit back and listen to the cd in one sitting, it is hard to distinguish where one song ends and another begins.
An Epic record from an epic duo.
Don't even think of not buying this, it's mind-blowing December 1, 2006 Alan Sturgess 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
OK. So if you're reading this and looking at this album, you already know all about this pair of firebrand musicians who play the wildest style of acoustic nylon-strung guitar music that you'll ever hear. By their own admission, their playing falls somewhere amongst Flamenco, Jazz and Thrash - but it truly is mind-blowing. Meoldically superb; rhythmically astounding and yet these two people play with a modesty that totally belies their talent or impact.
As for this particular release - the DVD is a real bonus. There are only a few tracks, but if you're a guitarist you MUST, MUST, MUST buy this for the extensive and detailed tutorial which explores and explains an enormous amount about the ways in which they play.
I cannot find words effusive enough to urge you to buy this CD/DVD pairing.
Original and Brilliant November 21, 2006 Eric Ambleside (North Yorkshire) 31 out of 32 found this review helpful
And if you think the CD is good, wait until you see them live. My God, can these two play.
Saw them in Leeds last night, and they were electrifying. I've seldom seen a crowd so blown away. Rodrigo is not exactly a slouch, but Gabriella is astonishing. The sheer power, variety and sonic scope of what comes out of her guitar is like nothing I've heard. Whether she is playing reasonably straight or just belting the poor old guitar like a drum kit, the outcome in tandem with Rodrigo's fine melodic playing is mesmeric.
I dread to think what might happen if these two tried this with a pair of Fenders.
Buy the CD, but above all, go and see them.
Constant high.. May 28, 2006 Jan (West Sussex, UK) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I sometimes watch Jools Holland's Later to maybe find some gold. Well a couple of weeks ago I found a big fat nugget. The energy of these two players left me breathless; it was melodic, intelligent, rhythmic and beautiful. Couldn't believe they only played one number. It left me wanting more. I bought this album the same evening and was absolutely NOT disppointed. Intensity of heavy metal, the grace of flamenco, the intricacy of jazz all delivered with a consistent melodic beauty. Perfect..
Music has a new genre - called RyG May 26, 2007 Rishi (London, England) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I came across GyR when hearing they were one of the support acts for MUSE at Wembley Stadium in 3 weeks time. Having not heard of them, i was disappointed, but then felt i needed to give it chance and listen to the album..........................am i glad i did!!!
Its something which is unique - being able to captivate an audience with no vocals and simply acoustics. I can honestly say this is the first time i have seriously enjoyed lyricless music. Its fast, intense, exciting and both Rodrigo and Gabriela are incredibly talented.
Tamacun, Diablo Rojo and Orion are my personal favourites, but then again i think the whole album is great!!
Make sure you watch them as well, seeing the way they play acoustics is an incredible thing to watch and i now cannot wait to see them at Wembley!!!
