Customer Reviews:
5 out of 5 stars An excelllent overview of early Basie   September 17, 2008

This 4 CD box set has some of the best performance notes, running to 90 pages, I've ever come across. The CDs include small group and big band tracks not in chronological order which can be a bit confusing at times as the recording quality differs but in fairness if you read the discography first you wont be surprised.

This is the old testament band or members of it throughout the 4CDs. Disc 4 is exclusively recorded from radio broadcasts, a reduction in sound quality but great music including three tracks with Billie Holiday and a track where Lester Young can't stop his solo for the end of the transmission!

The whole set dips into Basie's recordings between 1936 - 1950 and should be on your shelf. Do read the notes early on, it really does increase your enjoyment
