Customer Reviews:
5 out of 5 stars If you like cool jazz, you will love this CD   June 6, 2001

If you like your jazz cool and inspirational, this album is for you. It's as fresh today as the day it was recorded in October 1953. The collaboration of two 'giants' Chet Baker and Art Pepper is sensational. Listening to the clean and artful lines of Pepper you would never guess the torment he went through. (For more on this see his autobiography "Straight Life" - Amazon books). Listen to his interplay with Baker on his original 'Tynan Time'. Chet Baker was one of the most talked about trumpeters of his time, another tortured soul. But here his playing is joyous and a revelation. Cooler than Miles Davis, more fiery than Art Farmer, he has never sounded better. Add the little know tenor of Phil Urso and you have a front line that will swing you into bad health. The rhythm section of stalwarts Carl Perkins, Curtis Counce and the vastly underated Larance Marable are a perfect foil for the front line. All but two tracks are written and brilliantly arranged by Jimmy Heath. The other two are Pepper originals. So, kick of your shoes, open that bottle of cooled Chardonnay and get hip to the swingiest group of the 50's.You might also like the album by Miles Davis "Kinda Blue"
